Prep Your Home For Painting Like A Pro

Squarepegs Handyman Prep for Painting Like a Pro

A fresh coat of paint leaves your home looking fresh and clean. It’s a simple way to refresh the feel and aesthetic of any room in your home.

When done well, painting adds value to your house while breathing new life and fresh style into your home.

When painting is done poorly, visible roller marks, paint splatters and sloppily painted trims are little better than the cracked and peeling paint you were hoping to cover up.

While tackling painting projects yourself can be difficult, DIY painting is a great way to save money on hiring a painter or handyman to do the work for you.

Doing a great job with your DIY painting project starts with getting down to business and doing the appropriate prep work before you even start painting.

In this article, we share our top tips to help you prepare your home for painting like a pro.

TOP TIPS FOR DIY PAINTING PREP

CLEAR THE AREA

While moving furniture and other fixtures away from the walls is self evident, some DIYers forget about removing hardware, curtain rods, switch plates and the like before getting started.

Leaving items attached to walls create obstacles that you have to cut in and paint around. This ends up costing you more time than it would have taken to remove the items in the first place.

PROTECT YOUR FLOOR

Even the tidiest painter is bound to make a mess with paint splatter. Old sheets, or drop cloths make great protection for your carpet or hardwood floors.

Taking the time to protect your floors will save you a lot of time and headache when it comes to post-painting clean up.

SUGAR SOAP THE WALLS

Once you’ve cleared your walls and put down your drop clothes, the next step is to clean your walls. We recommend using a dry cloth and liquid sugar soap. This will help to remove the built up dust and debris that tends to accumulate over time and will keep your paint from drying streaky.

Cleaning your walls in this way provides another opportunity for you to check your walls over for any gouges, dings or other imperfections that will need filling prior to painting.

TAPE IT UP

While taping up skirting boards and other areas you want to remain paint-free is time consuming, it’s a necessary step to complete your painting project like a pro.

Painters tape is the perfect solution for protecting the smaller areas of your home that drop sheets miss.

USE PRIMER

Now that you’ve tackled the cleaning, spackling, sanding and minimising mess, it’s time to apply primer.

An alternative to this step would be to use a paint with a primer already in it. This is an excellent time saving option.
