Squarepegs is a woman-led business, founded by owner/operator, Britten.
Having a woman at the helm of a trade-based business puts Squarepegs in the unique position to be able to tackle the issues and obstacles that are faced solely by women when it comes to engaging tradies and other contractors.
Having an understanding of the female-perspective with engaging tradies has allowed Squarepegs to build a female-first focus into the very foundation of Squarepegs and all of the work we do. All of this, to make a woman’s experience with Squarepegs just that little bit more comfortable.
A HANDYMAN Service UNIQUELY TAILORED TO WOMEN
Having enlisted tradies to complete work for her, Britten became aware the woman’s experience with tradies is different than that of a man.
Interacting with male tradies left Britten feeling talked-over, dismissed and undermined. A conversation between a tradie, herself and her husband, Sean, cast Britten as an unwelcome participant in a conversation about work to be done on her own home.
As more and more tradies entered Britten and Sean’s home, it became apparent, this was not an isolated incident.
There were additional elements with trades-based businesses that Britten realised needed some re-jigging to more seamlessly fit into the life of a lot of different women including:
scheduling work and estimates around school and childcare drop-offs;
keeping worksite noise, including music, to a minimum;
using respectful and appropriate language while on-site;
enquiring about children’s nap schedules and planning power tool usage around naps;
respecting each clients’ home, keeping the work area clean and ensuring everything is neat and tidy when we leave;
maintaining a groomed, hygienic and clean physical appearance;
communicating transparently, clearly and respectfully; and more.
In creating Squarepegs, and with a vision of creating an experience tailored to women, Britten developed an exclusive training program helping tradespeople work effectively with women.
As part of our commitment to the female clients we have the privilege of working with, all of the tradespeople who work with Squarepegs, as well as our franchisees, undergo specialised training and are held to working hours which are less intrusive and impactful on a woman’s life.
INSPIRED BY WOMEN
Women, and the female experience with trades-based businesses are the bedrock of Squarepegs. Women are the reason we exist.
Before founding Squarepegs, Britten had left a workplace where she felt women were undervalued and treated unfairly and less-than their male co-workers. This position was one which put her marketing skills and expertise to good work, and one which she enjoyed, so the decision to resign was a difficult one.
Walking out the door on her last day, Britten made the promise to herself that she would create something for women. Squarepegs is the realisation of that promise. It is also just the beginning.
