Different Types of Paint And How to Use Them

When deciding to paint something whether it is something small or a big job like painting your house it can be very daunting. There are many different types of paint and knowing the right choice is difficult. I'm going to explain to you your options and what type of paint suits what job.

The right paint for the job

Oil based paints dry much slower but provide a smoother and glossier finish, oil based paints are also more resistant to scratches, staining and fingerprints. You also get a more thorough cover in a single coat with oil based paint. Oil based paints are known for their water resistant and long lasting abilities. Oil paints are perfect for use on metallic and wooden surfaces and are perfect for home projects due to the ability to clean the surface easily.

Emulsion paints are water based and dry much quicker than oil based so you can get a few coats in a day speeding up the painting process immensely. Emulsion paints can be cleaned up easily with soap and water and the finished product resists cracking and yellowing. Emulsion paints are low on VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) making it a non toxic environmentally safe choice. They are mould and mildew resistant and are resistant to fading in the sun.

If you are wanting to paint exterior metal, pipes, external structures, steel or iron work then the paint you are looking for is Anti-Corrosive paint. This paint is used to protect from rust, environmental and chemical degradations and is cost effective and long lasting. Anti-corrosive paint is made up from anti corrosive elements like fine sand, linseed oil and zinc chrome.

Distemper paint is one of the oldest types of paint, also known as cement paint. It is made up of lime, chalk, pigment, water and glue. Traditional distemper paints came in a powder form and needed to be mixed before use, but contemporary versions are in paint form. The benefits of using distemper paint is no cracking from sunlight, can be applied ith no primer to cement or rough surfaces and is a more cost effective choice compared to other paints.

Enamel paints are an oil based solvent that have the characteristics that come with oil based paint like slow drying and hardness. A more expensive choice but enamel paints have extreme durability, are water and stain resistant, boast strong adhesion and provide a glossy finish. Enamel paints are perfect for humid and wet areas like bathroom and kitchen metals, walls that need protection and great for woodwork, metal work and window work. Enamel paints offer great coverage, hardness and colour retention.
