Our Work: ModWood Deck In Toukley

This job was completed for one of our lovely clients who is also a return client, which we always love and appreciate. It is very rewarding when clients are so happy with the results of their project that they have us back to complete more work for them. Over a year ago our client had us, working as PURRfect Palaces, build a custom Catio for their beloved kitty, but this time they were looking for a solution for a different area.

Bespoke Decking Solutions By Squarepegs Handyman

The stairs from our client’s back door to the courtyard were very steep, uneven and unsafe for her grandchildren, who often visit, and love playing in the raised garden beds which line the courtyard. The property is at the lower end of a slope, which means lots of water passes through the area during heavy rains, and the drainage system has an access pit that needs yearly cleaning.

With these parameters in mind we designed a deck which would be even with the internal floor height, which solved the problem with the unsafe stairs. This height was also close to the level of the raised garden beds, and allowed easy access for the grandkids. We decided on extending the deck around the corner of the garden bed to give a bit more usable space, and to add a small square section to bring the main deck to the block work at the other end. The height of the deck allowed for a single step at each end and no need for handrails which would look much tidier. With the height, size and shape of the deck decided the only issue now was access to the drainage pit.

Solving Problems On A Deck build In Toukley

The pit cover was small, only around 300mm square, so this allowed a smaller access hatch, but the depth of the pit meant that it would be unreachable through a simple hatch in the deck. For this reason we designed a step that was completely removable, rather than on hinges. This allowed it to be taken right out of the way and give the best access to the pit for cleaning.

Working With CoMposite Decking

For the decking design we went with a picture frame style edge, and used ModWood composite decking because it is completely maintenance free and can be installed with hidden fasteners for a very sleek, clean finished product. To add to this the deck was sized to make use of the consistent 5400mm long ModWood boards, and has no end-to-end joins anywhere. With under 2m of total offcuts this was a very efficient build.

The finished deck looks fantastic and the client was absolutely thrilled claiming it was “so much nicer and more useful than I had even hoped”. Another day, another great result for a valued client. While there we discussed a custom bunk bed/playroom build for early next year, so watch this space!
